In his Budget 2019 speech the Finance Minister mentioned two new VAT related measures which are of interest to businesses and the general public.
The first one relates to the introduction of a VAT refund scheme on the purchase of domestic reverse osmosis systems. This refund is capped at Eur70 per system. This measure is intended to reduce the use of water bought in plastic bottles and is therefore beneficial to the environment.
Another measure relates to the extension of the applicability of the current reduced VAT rate of 5% applied on books, audio books and printed matter, to cover also books, newspapers and other publications provided electronically. This measure removes a previous disincentive to provide books and newspapers electronically and will hopefully encourage their proliferation, thus benefiting the environment.
